Avonté began his football career at the age of eleven playing with the Detroit Dolphins. He didn’t start playing high school football until his junior year where he made an immediate impact with 1,193 all-purpose yards. That season he also had 10 touchdowns, 8 interceptions and 24 tackles to help his team win the city championship. He became one of the top athletes in Michigan his senior year by playing slot receiver, running back, defensive back and kick returner. On offense he averaged 27.3 yards per catch, totaling 35 receptions for 965 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also averaged 11.0 yards per rush with 717 yards and 4 touchdowns on 65 carries. He is a "shutdown" corner who helped the King Crusaders’ defense limit opponents to 10.9 points per game. On defense, he had 4 interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns. Another 2 touchdowns were scored by Avonté on punt returns. He helped lead his team to a 10-2 record and a semi-finals appearance in the MHSAA playoffs in his senior season. Maddox was rated the number six overall prospect in the state by Scout.com, #15 by 247Sports and #22 by Rivals.

Avonté was a four-year starter on the baseball team where he was named MVP for four years straight. He is currently a prospect for the Toronto Bluejays and the Texas Rangers. He also played varsity basketball.

Avonté thanked, "God, my family, the Martin Luther King coaching staff, and The University of Pittsburgh, where I will continue my football career." He said, "My favorite quote and motto is, ‘Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of breaths that are taken away.’"
