2005 All Star East Coach

 

Assistant Coach LeRoy Wood

Summerfield High School

 

In the fall of 2005 Coach Wood will begin his 41st season of coaching HS football. Coach Wood began his career at McTigue Junior High (Toledo, Ohio) where he was a freshman football coach. He coached at McTigue from 1965-1968. Coach Wood moved to Rogers HS (Toledo) as a varsity assistant, serving one year as offensive coordinator. He was there from 1969-1971. His first head coaching opportunity was at Summerfield HS. He coached at Summerfield from 1972-1987. While at Summerfield he won five Tri-County Conference Championships. Coach Wood then moved to Erie-Mason where he was head coach for five years (1988-1992). He then moved to Cardinal Stritch HS in Oregon, Ohio where he was head coach for three years (1993-1995). Coach Wood spent one year at Dundee HS (1996) and seven years at Erie-Mason (1997-2003) as an assistant coach, including six years as defensive coordinator. In his last two seasons at Erie-Mason the Eagles enjoyed great success winning 23 and losing 2. Erie-Mason was defeated in the regional finals in 2002 and the semifinal in 2003. Coach Wood is presently the defensive coordinator at Summerfield HS where he will begin his second season.

 

Coach Wood is a 1959 graduate of Central Catholic HS in Toledo where he played football. He earned his Bachelors Degree from the University of Toledo in 1965. He earned a Masters Degree in Educational Administration in 1977 from the University of Toledo.

 

Coach Wood was inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004. He was Monroe County Coach of the Year in 1975. Coach Wood was selected as a Regional Coach of the Year by the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association in 1975, 1985, and 1986.

 

Coach Wood was a teacher for 36 years teaching mathematics, health, and physical education. He retired from teaching in June, 2001. LeRoy and his wife Marilynne have been married for 38 years. They have two sons, Jeff (37) and Kevin (33) and a daughter Lisa (35). They have three grandchildren.
